CHURCH HILL — The rain paused just in time on Wednesday afternoon as Appalachian Community Federal Credit Union held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its Church Hill branch.
Just off U.S. Highway 11W at 201 Central Ave., Unit 2, next to a Marathon Gas Station, the credit union is the first Church Hill branch to open.
Around 50 people mingled, enjoying snacks provided by Hale Springs Inn, lemonade and boba and a spin the wheel for prizes. Many community leaders, local law enforcement and first responders attended.
“I’m excited to be able to be a part of this opening today,†said Joe Boggs, chairman of the board of directors. He has served with the credit union for about 25 years.
Board Chairman Joe Boggs expressed his excitement of the branch’s opening.
He credited the community leaders for their support in the opening of the Church Hill branch.
“ACFCU is 93 years strong, and we’re trying to expand in some of these areas to close some of the gaps between our Rogersville branch and Kingsport branches,†Boggs said. “We’re proud to be here to serve the citizens of Hawkins County — Church Hill, Mount Carmel — and surrounding areas.â€
Church Hill Mayor Dennis Deal attended and spoke next.
“You invested into the city of Church Hill,†Deal said. “That means a lot to us. We’re excited for you guys, and we’re excited for our city.â€
ACFCU CEO and President Andy Mullins recognized the employees of the Church Hill branch and thanked everyone who contributed to the ribbon cutting and opening.
“At Appalachian Community Federal, we believe in building lifetime relationships, and we believe in giving our members the financial tools that you need to be successful,†Mullins said.
He said community was important to the credit union and asked for a member of the Mount Carmel Merchant’s Association to come up.

Nancy Barker, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, said the Rogersville ACFCU branch upheld the values of community there, saying Rogersville Branch Manager Misti Race was very involved.
“We got her on our chamber board, and we appreciate all the support that Appalachian Credit Union does for our chamber and for all they do for the community,†Barker said.
