BLOUNTVILLE — A revered voice in Americana and roots music soon will sing and play at Northeast State Community College.
The man behind the voice is Darrell Scott, whose words and recordings shaped the sounds of modern country and folk music long before indie twang became chic.
Northeast State welcomes the Darrell Scott Electrifying Trio — also featuring Bryn Davies and Jeff Sipe — to perform 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, in the Ballad Health Center for the Performing Arts Theater on the Blountville campus, 2425 Highway 75 and adjacent to Tri-Cities Airport.
Pricing information and tickets are available at .
BACKGROUND
From his recordings to collaborations with Steve Earle, Beyoncé, the Chicks and Emmylou Harris, Scott mines and cultivates the everyday moment. He takes the rote, menial and mundane and allows it to be surreal, poignant and candidly honest — blooming and resonating.
On albums such as Family Tree, Theatre of the Unheard, Live at the Station Inn and Jaroso, Scott’s words help listeners make sense of the world and their place in it.
A distinguished roster of musical royalty has recorded Scott’s songs, including Guy Clark, Faith Hill, Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks, Patty Loveless, Trace Adkins and Tim McGraw.
A four-time Grammy nominee for songwriting, Scott has recorded with Steve Earle, Joan Baez, Jim Lauderdale, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Ginny Hawker.
Scott most recently toured with none other than the iconic Robert Plant and country heavyweights the Zac Brown Band. He holds coveted songwriter of the year awards from both the ASCAP and the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
MUSICAL FAMILY
Scott comes from a musical family. His father, Wayne Scott, introduced him to guitars at age 4, alongside a brother who played in the style of Jerry Reed. Scott released his late father’s second album, Wayne’s Pain, as a tribute on Father’s Day in June.
A recent review by American Songwriter magazine inspired the observation: “Imagine the talent you must have if Robert Plant thinks he should step aside so you can sing a song; Darrell Scott doesn’t have to imagine that.â€
When he isn’t writing or performing, Scott roams his Tennessee wilderness acreage, hikes along a small river, creates meals with food raised on his property and plays music. He often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their truths through their stories. Scott stays busy writing, producing, performing and fully immersing himself in life.
OTHER PERFORMERS
Anthony Childress will open the evening on stage. Childress’ project is composed of a trio of friends based in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. They offer familiar songs in unfamiliar ways, as well as many originals that offer an emotional connection to the music.
The trio will be joined by Bristol, Tennessee’s Blake Collins, a mandolinist known for his unique sound that bridges tradition and innovation. Rooted in the rich heritage of bluegrass, Collins draws inspiration from an eclectic range of styles, bringing a distinctive voice to every project.
