ETSU President Brian Noland congratulates Science Hill senior Ellen Hong on her acceptance to the Quillen Honors Scholars program.
A recent visit by a university president led four Science Hill seniors to learn they were among a select few admitted into a medical school preparatory program.
ETSU President Brian Noland stopped by Science Hill High School on Feb. 11 to surprise and congratulate Gianna Becerra, Ellen Hong, Astha Patel and Lauren Yobst on their acceptance into the university’s Quillen Honors Scholars program.
“The Quillen Honors Scholars program is a transformative opportunity that reflects ETSU’s commitment to preparing the next generation of healthcare leaders,†Noland said. “By providing rigorous academic preparation, immersive experiential learning and a seamless transition from undergraduate studies to medical school, this program equips our students with the skills, knowledge and passion needed to excel in the medical profession.â€
A partnership between ETSU’s Honors College and Quillen College of Medicine, the Quillen Honors Scholars program is designed to help undergraduate students transition smoothly to medical school.
Only 15 first-year students are selected each year to be a part of the program, which enables them to have access to curriculum and enrichment experiences during their undergrad years that will prepare them for the unique demands of medical training.
Additionally, all Quillen Honors Scholars will receive a $5,000 scholarship per year and funding for a required study abroad program, summer enrichment opportunities and research activities.
Science Hill Principal Josh Carter was appreciative to Noland for visiting the school to congratulate the students.
“We’re fortunate to have an institution like ETSU, especially its Quillen College of Medicine, in our community providing opportunities like this for our students,†he said. “These four students are extremely talented, and we hope to see them do well in their academic and professional careers once they graduate.â€
