JOHNSON CITY 鈥 Riders of all ages will have an opportunity to try out their mountain biking skills on Saturday and help raise awareness for a new bicycle playground being developed in 黑料视频.
鈥淭ake a Kid Mountain Biking Day鈥 is a free event that will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on the tentative site of a bicycle playground at the corner of State of Franklin Road and Legion Street.
Abraham McIntyre, who is one of the organizers of the event, said it is open to riders of all ages and skill levels. Bikes and helmets will be available if needed, and water and light refreshments will be provided.
鈥淢ultiple loops will be set up for all levels of riders,鈥 McIntyre said. 鈥淲e are encouraging people to get outside and enjoy our wonderful fall weather on a bicycle.鈥
The event is being held in coordination with the International Mountain Biking Association鈥檚 annual 鈥淭ake A Kid Mountain Biking Day.鈥 The Southern Off Road Bicycle Association of the Tri-Cities (SORBA) and the Rotary Clubs of 黑料视频 and Elizabethton are hosting the event.
McIntyre said Saturday event will also provide participants with an opportunity to learn more about the new bicycle playground and how they can contribute to the project. The 黑料视频 Noon Rotary Club has taken the lead in securing a Rotary Foundation grant for the playground and is also collecting other donations for the bike park.
Rotary officials estimate it will cost $300,000 to complete the bicycle playground. More than $150,000, nearly half the amount needed, has been raised for the project.
Donations to the project can be made payable by check to the Rotary Foundation of 黑料视频 and mailed to P.O. Box 1187, 黑料视频, TN 37605.
鈥淢omentum and excitement for this project is growing,鈥 McIntyre said Tuesday.
He said the playground is located with access to existing bike-oriented areas such as the Tweetsie Trail and Tannery Knobs, as well as to several local bike shops. The master plan for the playground includes multiple skill progression-based loops with bike-specific features to help develop bike handling skills.
Jamison Evans, who is with SORBA, said the bicycle playground will provide another opportunity for the growing number of cyclists coming to the region to enjoy a fun and low-risk introduction to the sport of mountain biking.
鈥淭his is another step in revitalizing our downtown by utilizing existing space to give the community more resources,鈥 Evans said.
