GATE CITY — The Gate City Town Council will hold a special called meeting Monday to discuss the proposed changes to the first phase of community park plans.
According to a notice from the council, the meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. inside the Gate City Town Hall Council Chambers at 156 East Jackson Street.
The public is invited to attend, the notice states.Â
A meeting was originally scheduled for June 24 but was cancelled since the necessary report was not provided by the scheduled time.
Background
Quesenberry, the construction company handling the project, notified the town in June that the projected cost for Phase I rose to $813,500, which is $213,500 more than the original projected budget, Town Manager Greg Jones previously told the Times News.
Sixteen proposed changes, totaling $223,006, include delays on installing tennis court nets, skate park/pump track equipment, bleachers, contractor landscaping, dancing rails, curbing and parking space bumpers.
Space for the basketball and pickleball courts would remain in Phase I, Jones previously said. Only four pickleball courts, two full basketball goals and court striping are planned for the revised project.
By keeping the bond as part of the contract and making these changes, $213,506 in costs would be cut from the raised cost.
Full plans for the project, as approved in October 2024, included:
• Basketball court
• Sheltered pavilion
• Splash pad
• Two pickleball courts
• Park lawn
• Parking along approximately two-thirds of the lot
• Pedestrian connection to Jackson Street
Phase I was said to include a basketball court, two pickleball courts, skate track and green space. The first phase was anticipated to be completed by Summer 2025. Later phases could include an event state and splash pad, the Time News previously reported.
