Last week’s Question of the Week was “Should National Guard troops be deployed to U.S. cities?â€
Thank you to everyone who responded. Here are a few of your comments.
Vicki Pendergrass: I would encourage anybody who thinks this is a good idea to watch the movie “The Penguin Lessons†available on Netflix now. Argentina 1976 and it looks a lot like USA 2025. I would suggest that if the Tennessee National Guard is looking for an opportunity to improve communities that they look to the Lynn Garden community, which is unrecognizable today compared to what it was like when it was an actual thriving neighborhood when I grew up there. It’s a part of Kingsport now, right? How about we focus on making Kingsport great again?
Steve Mitchell: Yes, to augment the police where crime is high. I worked in Washington DC for 30 years and ran screaming from that area when I retired.
Crime has always been high there, and the Democrat leadership there has hamstrung the police and given the criminals an incentive to continue to rob, rape and murder without consequences.
Frederick L. Passno: No. Unconstitutional.
Wanda Pate: No. We do not need a takeover of our cities. I understand the crime rate is down. He needs to go to Louisiana. It is the worst state in the U.S. for crime.
Bill Johnson: Yes.
Sherri Richards: Although I can certainly see why it appears necessary, I don’t think it should be done. With crime and disorder at horrendous levels, the urge to return to law and order would make this an attractive option. The arguments for it are that it will be short term, and limited in scope. The U.S. military are not trained or screened for civilian law enforcement. Possibly the MPs are OK to be used. Assuming you trust the deploying administration and first blush results are good, it is not a long-term solution to the many crime problems we have. I am against it due to the setting of precedent and the huge opportunities for misuse. I understand the temptation but still think it is a dangerous action.
James Stanton: Yes. Cities where there are heavy crimes — car thieves/hijacking, muggings, homicides, rapes, etc.
