GREENEVILLE — The Kingsport Axmen took the opening game of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Greeneville, but Greeneville rebounded and maintained their grip on first place in the division.
After dropping a 6-5 decision to Kingsport in the first game, the Flyboys won the nightcap on a tiebreaker after playing to a 3-3 tie.
The Axmen (10-8) once again jumped out to a 5-0 lead but this time got the sixth run they needed, courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Daniel Boone graduate Brogan Jones in the sixth.
RBI singles by Mycah Jordan and Tyler Inge, as well as an RBI triple from Reid Haire got the Flyboys (11-6) within a run, but Kaleb Townsend got the final out for his first save.
Landis Davila’s RBI single broke the scoreless tie in the second, and Tyler Myatt made it 3-0 with a solo home run in the third, his third blast of the Appalachian League season. Colin Larson (triple) and Dylan Jackson (double) drove in runs for a 5-0 lead in the fourth.
Ben Tryon and Larson both hit 3-for-4. J.J. Harrell (W, 3-0) went 1 1/3 innings in relief with one strikeouts and one hit allowed.
It was the Axmen who rallied in the nightcap, falling behind 3-1 before Kam Durnin doubled home two runs in the fifth. It was his fifth double of the year.
But for the second time in as many nights, the tiebreaker went to Greeneville — which holds a 1 1/2 game lead for first place in the Appy League West.
Both teams had four hits, Cameron Kim leading the Flyboys with two.
