East Tennessee throwers come through at THPA tourney
Doug Sullins from Erwin was the winner in the Class A competition at the Tennessee Horseshoe Pitcher Association tournament last Saturday at White Pine. East Tennessee throws took the top three spots with David Kell from Tazewell second and Allen Pinkston from Greeneville third.
Joyce Manis from Kingsport was the winner in Class B. Henry Nease from Parrottsville finished runner-up.

Providence Academy opens season with 9-0 win over Berean Christian
JOHNSON CITY — The 2025 campaign got off on the right foot on Tuesday evening with a district victory for Providence.
Anarose Kozlowski netted a hat trick for the Lady Knights with Lindsey Williams adding two more goals.
Single goals were scored by Addie Clay, Lynlee Carr, and Eliyana Miller. No assists were recorded.

CB Sneed back and targeting Titans' season opener at Denver
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee cornerback L’Jarius Sneed says the plan is for him to be ready for the Titans’ season opener Sept. 7 at Denver and he's very confident that will happen. Sneed passed his physical and was removed from the physically unable to perform list in time for practice Wednesday.
The two-time Super Bowl champion was part of the Titans’ big offseason spending spree in March 2024. Sneed played five games before a quadriceps injury put him on injured reserve. Sneed said during an offseason camp that he was as healthy as he’s been.
He started training camp on the PUP list with team officials saying Sneed had a knee cleaned up in May.

Pirates to call up Bubba Chandler, baseball's top pitching prospect
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have decided to promote 22-year-old right-hander Bubba Chandler ahead of their game Friday against the Colorado Rockies. Chandler is baseball’s top pitching prospect.
Pirates manager Don Kelly said he’s excited to add Chandler to a staff that already includes 2024 NL Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes. Chandler is expected to initially work in a bulk bullpen role.
He got off to a hot start in Triple-A this year, but has stumbled lately and is currently 5-6 with a 4.05 ERA in 100 innings pitched this year for Indianapolis.
Yankees become 1st team to hit 9 homers in a game twice in one season
TAMPA, Fla. — The New York Yankees put on quite a power show during a 13-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, becoming the first team in major league history to hit nine home runs in a game twice in one season.
After the first pitch was delayed nearly two hours by rain, Giancarlo Stanton, Cody Bellinger and José Caballero each homered twice at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Aaron Judge launched his 40th of the season, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ben Rice also went deep, and the Yankees equaled a franchise record with nine home runs.
New York also hit nine in its second game of the year, a 20-9 victory over Milwaukee on March 29 at Yankee Stadium.

Basketball at 2028 LA Olympics will start 2 days before opening ceremony
MIES, Switzerland — Basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will start two days before the opening ceremony for those Games.
FIBA, the sport’s global governing body, said that it has reviewed a revised basketball schedule for Los Angeles and that games will begin on July 12, 2028 — ahead of the July 14 opening ceremony.
It is unclear if the men’s tournament, the women’s tournament or both will start before the official opening.
