University High continues to roll through the baseball postseason with Cosby its latest victim.
The Bucs defeated the Eagles 11-1 in five innings in Friday afternoon’s Region 1-A tournament at Milligan University. While impressive, University High coach Christian Taylor said the Bucs have to play better if they want to make a repeat trip to the state championship game.
“It’s good to get a win, but I don’t feel like we played very good baseball,†Taylor said. “We will have to clean it up for a hungry North Greene team.â€
University High (24-8) will play North Greene, a 5-2 winner over Washburn, on Saturday at noon. It will be the seventh time this season the Bucs and Huskies have met on the diamond.
The Bucs did most of their damage with seven runs in the second inning. For the game, they had five hits, and took advantage of six walks and three Cosby errors.
Knox Poston had a stat line of 2 for 2 at the plate with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Patrick Boynewicz also drove in two runs. They also combined on the pitcher’s mound to give up just one hit, one run and no walks.
Boynewicz got the start and picked up the win with six strikeouts over four innings. Poston struck out two batters in the fifth.
“He threw strikes. That’s what he does, he fills up the zone and allows our defense to play,†Taylor said about Boynewicz. “He’s been an opener here and there and certain games when we’ve needed him to ride, he’s been able to fill up ll
Three other University High players — Sam Duncan, Maddox Anderson and Cole Stevenson — scored two runs apiece. Jacob Williams reached base three times with one double and two walks. He and Cooper Stevenson each drove in a run.
