Blake Brown went back to his old Kentucky home as the winner of last Saturday’s Cumberland Plateau Open Wheel Modified race at Volunteer Speedway.
Brown held off the challenge of Chris Wilson from Crossville at the 4/10-mile dirt track with Gatlinburg driver Adam Ogle third. Jeff Ferguson from Limestone was the top finisher among Tri-Cities area drivers, eighth in the 30-lap feature. Johnny Mitchell from Jonesborough posted a 12th-place finish.
Wes Tilley from Andersonville took top honors in the 25-lap Sportsman Late Model race. He held off Terry Poore from Seymour for the victory with former track champion Tim Maupin from ºÚÁÏÊÓÆµ the third-place finisher.
For the first time in three decades, Limestone driver Jeff Mays parked his car in victory lane. He had to beat a couple of frequent front runners with Mark Sise from Seymour second and Kentucky racer John Stevens third.
Morristown drivers took the top two spots in Street Stocks with Austin Atkins ahead of Colby Long. North Carolina driver J.D. Smith rounded out the top three. James Burnette from Knoxville captured the the Front Wheel Drive victory with Dylan Jones from Limestone second and Bryan Williams from Sevierville in third.
NEWPORT SPEEDWAY
Derek Kraus, a Wisconsin driver who races part-time in the NASCAR Truck Series, used fresher tires to charge through the field and win last Saturday’s ASA Stars race at Newport Speedway.
Florida racer Stephen Nasse finished second ahead of Dawson Sutton, Carson Brown and Austin Nason.
Kingsport drivers took the top four positions in the Front Wheel Drive race. John Ketron, the 2023 NASCAR Division 3 National Champion, was the winner in the No. 26 Honda. Steven Watts, who won the previous night at Kingsport Speedway, finished second.
David “Animal†Trent and Josh Collins took the next two spots with Josh Ramsey from Del Rio in fifth.
Anthony Brown from Sevierville captured the Crown Vic race with Daniel McMurray from Fall Branch second. Kentucky driver Jerry Payne was third with Morristown racers Joseph and Chase McGill fourth and fifth.
LONESOME PINE MP
Lonesome Pine Motorsports Park has Fan Appreciation Night scheduled Saturday at the 3/8-mile asphalt oval in Coeburn, Va.
It is headlined by the Super Cup Stock Car Series and twin 40-lap features for the Late Model Sportsman classes. Other races are for: Pure 4, Stock 4, Street Stock, Crown Vic, Bandolero and twin Legends features.
Gates open at 3 p.m. with the green flag to wave at 6 p.m. It’s a special $5 admission.
CHEROKEE RACE PARK
Rain washed out the Memorial Day race at Cherokee Race Park.
However, they were able to race two days earlier at the 1/8-mile Rogersville drag strip. Zack Helton beat Dustin Light in a battle of Rogersville racers in the Pro final. Chris Yates emerged the winner in No Box with Joey Greene runner-up. Tim Smith was the Sportsman winner, while Kolx Spencer bested Hunter Sanders in the Junior Dragster final.
There’s a test-and-tune Friday with a motorcycle cruise-in scheduled Saturday from 4-8 p.m. These are for street-legal bikes and not race bikes. Activities include track passes with a helmet required and a swap meet.
