Nashville Superspeedway is offering something unique for race fans in the Volunteer State this weekend.
The 1/3-mile concrete oval is site of IndyCar’s season finale, the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix, on Sunday. It’s the only chance to see the exotic open-wheel cars race in Tennessee, and the best part is it’s a full day of racing.
The Vintage Indy Cars are on the track at 10:30 a.m. eastern time, followed by the Indy NXT Series at 11:35 a.m. The main event is Sunday at 2:45 p.m.
There’s no drama in the championship fight as Alex Palou has already clinched his third straight title and his fourth in five years. But, there is drama concerning Nashville-area drivers.
Two-time series champion Josef Newgarden, who grew up in Hendersonville, is looking for his first win of the year in what has been a miserable 2025 season. Newgarden missed out on a chance for a third straight Indianapolis 500 victory in May, but a win on his home track would be a great boost for the Team Penske driver.
Colton Herta, a California native who lives in Nashville, is the defending race champion. It was his first-ever oval track win in the series. Like Newgarden, he’s yet to win in the 2025 season, although he’s shown speed with two poles.
Nationally, it’s a huge Labor Day racing weekend with the first NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Darlington and the prestigious NHRA U.S Nationals at Indianapolis.
KINGSPORT SPEEDWAY
Closer to home, the “Concrete Jungle†comes back to life Friday night with a night of NASCAR Weekly Series racing.
Kingsport driver Brad Housewright has used consistency to grab the Late Model points lead. He has a six-point advantage over Bluff City’s Zeke Shell, who has been the dominant driver, with 11 wins in 19 races.
Another pair of Kingsport racers — Bruce Crumbley and Derek Lane — are third and fourth in the standings with ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ veteran Brad Teague rounding out the top five.
Tristen Barnes from Draper, Va., leads the Super Street standings with his brother, Kyle Barnes, 22 points behind in the standings. Rob Austin from Castlewood, Va., is the Street Stock leader with Fall Branch driver Daniel McMurray second.
Tyler Conway from Kingsport holds a 10-point lead over Daniel’s brother, Keith McMurray, in the Crown Vic standings. It’s the same margin which Roger Wright holds over Joshua Collins in the Stock FWD class.
In Mod 4, Kevin Canter from Abingdon, Va., is closing in on another championship with chief rival Chris Amburgey second. Steven Watts has been dominant in Pure 4 with nine wins in 10 races. It has given him a commanding lead over fellow Kingsport racer David “Animal†Trent.
Grandstands open at 5 p.m. with practice, qualifying, followed by racing scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
NEW OWNER AT THE PINE
Veteran racer Joey Owens has purchased Lonesome Pine Motorsports Park. His investment looks to bring some new life to the 3/8-mile asphalt oval at Coeburn, Virginia.
Nathaniel Owens leads Joey Owens by eight points in the track’s Late Model Sportsman standings. Joey Owens paces the Street Stock standings with Tony Vance second. Watts is in a position to win the track title here as well with a 38-point lead over Dakota Collins.
There is a full day of racing scheduled Saturday with the Late Model Sportsman, Street Stock, Stock 4, Crown Vic, Legends and Bandoleros on tap.
NEWPORT SPEEDWAY
Newport Speedway featured strong 16-car fields for its twin Late Model races last Saturday.
North Carolina racer Tyler Worley won the first 40-lap feature ahead of Morristown racer Lance Gatlin. Former Kingsport Speedway champions Jacob York, Lee Tissot and Nik Williams rounded out the top five.
Gatlin won the second race with Worley the runner-up. Williams, Tissot and Kingsport teenager Hunter Morgan rounded out the top five.
Kingsport drivers John Ketron, Watts and Trent posted a 1-2-3 finish in Pure 4. Greg Grindstaff from Bakersville, N.C., in the Dale Earnhardt-designed No. 3 Monte Carlo, beat Church Hill’s Rusty Clendenin by inches for the Street Stock victory.
Amburgey was the Mod 4 winner and Rocky Yates finished second. Josh Ramsey from Del Rio won the Stock 4 feature with Jackson Crawford from Rogersville runner-up.
Mardy Roberts III from Church Hill in Legends and Joseph McGill from Morristown in Crown Vic rounded out the night’s winners.
BRISTOL DRAGWAY
Rain caused havoc to the racing schedule at Bristol Dragway again over the weekend.
It forced the completion of the PDRA Thunder Valley Throwdown to be postponed until Sept. 11 at GALOT Motorsports Park. It gives drivers a chance to win two trophies and big checks at the North Carolina event.
Bristol Dragway will try again this weekend with the BTE Labor Day Footbrake Challenge. It features three $15,000-to-win bracket races for the top footbrake drivers in the country.
Cherokee Race Park in Rogersville also had its PDRA points races washed out Saturday.
